Capital: Funafuti Population: 9,652 (SPC 2006) Land Area: 26 sq km No. of Islands: 9 Lat/Long: 8′S, 178′E Terrain: low coral atolls. Climate:tropical with regular easterly tradewinds with westerly storms from November to March. Common Flora: Coconut, pandanus, breadfruit, taro, banana, and papaya are the most common plants. Common Fauna: Migratory sea birds are often seen, while rats, lizards, pigs and chickens were all introduced by humans. Notes: Tuvalu was formerly known as the Ellice Islands and, with Kiribati, was part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands while they were a British colony. |
